"Box Street" by Jack Trollope
Very clever use of a double slip, sector plate and a turnout gives you a lot of work to do in a small area.

Jack’s Box Street Yard is destined to be a small-layout classic, and deservedly so. Construction is well within the capacity of any modeler, and the hidden sector plate/fiddle track allows a variety of operation that’s not easy to appreciate until you actually get a chance to ‘work the yard’. If you want to see what all the buzz is about in minimum-space model railroading, this is the layout to build.

I agree! I found that I could even put a second switch in place of the sector plate for a quick set-up to fiddle around with. I also, personally, have had dismal success with double-slips. I know others have had no troubles at all…maybe I am evil or something…So I just put in a regular crossing and felt it worked well enough [even with no run-around]. I also did not limit myself to the 4′ length at the time. And since I believe ‘there is a prototype for everything’, I could see this as part of a large layout with ease.
